Our editorial brief

Gear After Hours publishes practical advice about consumer electronics for everyday use. This policy applies to our buying guides, comparisons, and how-to articles, published under the Gear After Hours editorial desk byline.

We aim to make each article useful for a specific decision. A guide should identify the reader’s situation, explain the relevant features, include meaningful limitations, and help the reader decide whether an upgrade is worthwhile. We use scenario-based recommendations and clear tradeoffs rather than numeric product scores.

Sources and factual checks

For product features, our starting sources are manufacturers’ product pages, technical specifications, user manuals, and support documentation. For compatibility and shared technologies, we use relevant standards bodies and platform documentation where available. Source links and checking dates are provided with articles. A checking date records when we consulted the listed material; it is not a promise of continuous monitoring.

We distinguish a documented feature from an editorial inference about who might benefit. For example, a listed port standard can be verified, while a recommendation for travel depends on how much weight you want to carry, the space in your bag, and the cables your devices need. Exact performance can depend on software, accessories, network conditions, and regional model variations. We flag those dependencies when they affect the buying decision.

Research and hands-on testing

Our articles are based on research into published information, not hands-on product testing. Performance figures from a manufacturer are identified as published claims, not independent measurements. Battery life, comfort, and reliability can vary with the user and conditions, so a specification alone cannot settle every buying question.

Everyday scenarios help explain where a feature may be useful. They are examples to help you judge fit for your own routine. Any future article based on original testing will explain the products, conditions, method, and limits of that work.

Recommendations and commercial relationships

We choose recommendations around fit, compatibility, useful features, and tradeoffs. Inclusion is not a guarantee that a product is the cheapest option or the best choice for every person. A guide should include reasons to skip an option and avoid encouraging purchases that do not solve the stated problem.

Our current merchant links are ordinary links without publisher affiliate tracking. If we introduce commission-earning links, a plain-language notice will explain that relationship before commercial recommendations, and affected links will be identified. Sponsored material or a relevant product loan, gift, or other material connection will be disclosed in the article concerned.

Images, prices, and updates

Lifestyle covers use licensed stock photography to show a setting or category. A scene may not show the exact product discussed, and the people pictured are not endorsing our recommendations. Captions and alternative text describe the scene; photographs are illustrative rather than records of product testing.

Prices and availability are checked at the merchant rather than through a live pricing feed on this site. Before buying, confirm the current offer, regional specifications, and seller’s terms. Publication dates show when articles first appeared, while update dates identify later editorial revisions.

Corrections and reader feedback

A helpful correction identifies the article URL, the disputed sentence or feature, and a supporting primary source. We assess factual errors separately from a reasonable difference of opinion. Material corrections should be explained in the affected article; small spelling or formatting fixes may be made without a separate note. Our Contact page explains the information to include. We do not promise an individual purchasing consultation or a fixed response time.
